ABOUT THIS GUIDE

Hello, my name is Hydro, and I am creating this thread to help players improve their PvP skills in Minecraft. I’ve been playing Minecraft for a long time and have competed in various tournaments, even winning ones where money was involved. I’ve also had the opportunity to compete at a professional level against many top-tier pros, with over 10 years of PvP experience. This guide is meant to share the knowledge I’ve gained over the years and help others become better at PvP. I hope you find it useful and that it helps you take your skills to the next level!

1. Keybinds & Settings

Setting up your keybinds properly can make a huge difference in your PvP performance. Here’s a good setup to get started:

Keybind Recommendations:

  • W, A, S, D: Default movement keys, but if you're used to different controls, you can adjust these to fit your needs.
  • Right Click: Block or shield (important for sword and shield PvP).
  • Left Click: Attack.
  • Q: Drop item (useful for throwing items quickly).
  • R or Shift: Sprint (can be more comfortable than holding down the default "W" key).
  • F (or Scroll Wheel): Toggle between your weapons/items quickly in the hotbar such as items located in the 6 to 9th location.
  • C (or a custom key): Toggle crouch (important for blocking attacks).
  • 1-9: Hotbar keys for quick access to items (e.g., food, potions, or blocks) , set keybinds that are located close to your movement buttons or alternatively you can bind them to your mouse keys such as MW3 or side buttons.
  • Shift: Crouch for sneaking (used for precise movements and evading enemies).

Mouse Sensitivity:

Adjust your mouse sensitivity to a level where you feel in control, not too fast or too slow. A common range is between 50-70% in the Minecraft settings, but adjust it to your preference. Make sure it’s responsive but not twitchy, especially when aiming or strafing. Have a play around with different minecraft sensitivities as well as mouse DPIs, you dont want your aiming to be too fast but also not too slow just in case a player dodges your hit and side strafes you.

PvP Styles & Techniques

W-Tapping:

  • Purpose: This technique involves tapping the "W" key (move forward) at precise moments during a fight to reset your attack cooldown.
  • How to do it:
    1. Attack an enemy.
    2. Quickly release the "W" key, then tap it again to move forward.
    3. This prevents your opponent from having consistent hit registration, as it resets your attack speed.

Strafing:

  • Purpose: Strafing helps you avoid getting hit while maintaining offensive pressure on your opponent.
  • How to do it:
    1. Move side to side by alternating between A (left) and D (right).
    2. While strafing, you’ll want to aim at your opponent’s hitbox (usually their chest or head).
    3. Use strafe combined with S-tapping (walking backwards) to throw off their aim.
  • Tip: Try not to strafe too predictably. Mix up your movement with jumping or blocking to confuse your opponent.

Block Hitting:

  • Purpose: This technique involves hitting your opponent while blocking. It reduces incoming damage while you attack.
  • How to do it:
    1. Hold right-click to block with your sword.
    2. Swing with left-click to attack at the same time.
    3. You’ll take less damage while dealing normal damage to the enemy.
  • Tip: Use this when engaging in close combat, especially in 1v1 fights where both players are close to each other.

Crits:

  • Purpose: Critical hits allow you to do more damage in a fight.
  • How to do it:
    1. Jump and immediately attack while falling to land a critical hit.
    2. Your player will glow and hit with a damage bonus.
  • Tip: Combine crits with W-tapping or strafing to increase your chances of landing them without taking damage.

Rod / Fishing Rod PvP:

  • Purpose: A fishing rod can be used to both interrupt your opponent’s attacks and provide distance control.
  • How to do it:
    1. Right-click with the rod to “hook” your opponent.
    2. This will pull them toward you or push them away, giving you a brief advantage to attack or retreat.
  • Tip: Master the rod-pulling timing to interrupt your opponent’s combos. It’s an excellent tool for both aggressive and defensive play.

Bow PvP:

  • Purpose: Ranged attacks can give you an edge, especially when you're at a distance.
  • How to do it:
    1. Charge the bow by holding down right-click.
    2. Aim at your opponent’s head or chest for maximum damage.
    3. Release the bow when fully charged.
  • Tip: Use strafing and jumping to avoid getting hit by arrows. Also, try combining bow shots with quick weapon switches for a hybrid attack style.

Hotbar Management:

  • Purpose: Having your hotbar organized helps you react quickly during fights.
  • How to do it:
    1. Keep healing items, like golden apples or potions, at the ready (usually 1st and 9th slots).
    2. Keep weapons in the center for quick swapping (e.g., sword in 2nd slot, bow in 3rd).
    3. Swap to defensive tools (like shields or blocks) when necessary.
  • Tip: Practice switching between items quickly while still focusing on the fight.

General Tips for PvP

  • Practice Timing: Whether it's timing your W-taps or crits, timing your moves effectively will give you a noticeable advantage. It’s worth spending time in practice servers to get used to the flow.
  • Monitor Your Health: Always keep an eye on your health bar. It’s tempting to keep fighting until the last second, but disengaging and healing when needed is a pro-level move.
  • Know When to Block or Dodge: Some PvP situations call for a defensive approach—holding the shield/blocking or dodging incoming attacks. Don’t always attack; sometimes evasion is the best way to win.
  • Practice Reaction Time: PvP is fast-paced, so your reflexes need to be on point. Practice aiming and timing your attacks in custom PvP practice servers or arenas.

Advanced Tips

  • Environmental Awareness: Use your surroundings to your advantage. If you’re in a small space, try to box in your opponent with blocks to control the fight. On open terrain, use elevation to gain an advantage.
  • Know Your Opponent: If you notice your opponent is a bow spammer, try to close the gap quickly. If they’re using rods effectively, time your attacks to interrupt their combos.
  • Use Debuffs: Poison, weakness, and slowness can make a huge difference in a fight. Don’t hesitate to use splash potions or tipped arrows for crowd control.

To add a little more...

Aggression is king, my friends, in modes like gapple, passive play gets you killed. You NEED to be aggressive. Constant pressure, relentless attacks. Don't give your opponent a chance to breathe, let alone heal. As Sun Tzu said, "There is no instance of a nation benefiting from prolonged warfare".

Terrible guide, following this guide will make you no better than a 7th tier pvper.

Tier 1, Perfection (nobody)
Tier 2, Near perfection (Maybe one or two dozen of people)
Tier 3, Profoundly Skilled (Maybe 150 to 200 people)
Tier 4, Highly Skilled (one or two thousand people)
Tier 5, Skilled (Around 20k to 25k people)
Tier 6, Better than Average (I'll leave it up to your imagination)
Tier 7, Average
Tier 8, Newcomer
Tier 9, Noob (usually either mental issues or bad equipment)
Tier 10, Garbage (breathing is harder than defeating this person, even a tier 9 person won't have much trouble to defeat this)

If we're exclusively talking about PlayNetwork. I'd say the average skill ranges from Tier10 to Tier7, with the occasional Tier6.
I can safely say, after all the time I've spent on pika, I've never seen a person who'd even remotely qualify as a tier 4 pvper.
If I'm being generous, there is maybe, just maybe a handful of people who'd qualify as a Tier 5. Even so, they're all very much in the lower half of tier 5.
