Detailed description:

The disabling of hopper crafting on the last reset was likely intended to reduce hopper usage.​

​

Naked hoppers (hoppers not halted by a container) are the most notable source of hopper-related lag.​

​

a large portion of naked hoppers are used in large furnaces. ​

​

If blast furnaces could do the same work in half the time, fewer players would build large furnace arrays and those arrays would not be so big. E.g. a double-chest blast furnace setup is twice as fast as an equivalent furnace setup and doesn't take up nearly as much space and resources as a 4+ furnace array.​

One solution to reduce hopper usage is to just expand the recipe list of blast furnaces.​
