I would like to say pika if updated to 1.12 all the pvp areas will be very bad as due to pvp game changes from minecraft itself they changed the player hits per max 5seconds which made hard it won't make a difference if you play just for building but yeah -1

THEY DONT HAVE TO UPDATE TO 1.12!!! THEY CAN USE VIAVERSION TO FREAKING MAKE THE SERVER WORK 1.8-1.12 OF COURSE IF THEY USE NEWEST VERION OF WATERFALL WHICH IS A BUNGEECORD FORK I KNOW MOST SERVERS USE VIAVERSION IT NEVER CAUSES LAG BIG +1 FROM ME

+1 most says that it is not a good idea because of the PVP but they are wrong because with command there is a way to make PVP in 1.12 like 1.8

Just use 1.8.8 with ViaVersion upgrading to 1.12 is dumb and making 1.12 like 1.8 combat requires extra plugins like MassiveCombat but ViaVersion allows 1.8-1.12 ppl to join without any issues or incompatibilities
