We are witnessing a story of Japan, which took place in the year 1918, in a Japanese town haunted by unexplained events surrounding the Suzuki family. It was a sunny day in the summer when Eikichi Suzuki was roaming around the marketplace. He was searching for the perfect gift

He was finding a gift for his little sister, Okiku, whose birthday was just a few days away. Eikichi Suzuki searched the entire marketplace, and then he found the perfect gift for his sister Okiku — a doll. The doll was wearing traditional Japanese clothes and had a peaceful face. He thought that this was the perfect gift for his sister, and he decided to gift it to her on her birthday.

On her birthday, Okiku received gifts from her friends, relatives, and parents, but the gift she was most fond of was the doll gifted by her brother. After that, the doll was always found with Okiku. She used to sleep with the doll, comb the hair of the doll, play with the doll — and by seeing this, her brother was very happy. It warmed his heart to see how much she cherished it.

One day, Okiku was bitten by a mosquito, which gave her malaria. She became very sick. Her condition kept deteriorating — she had high fever, headache, and her whole body was aching. While all this was happening, she was holding the doll with her. After fighting for a week, she wasn't able to hold on for much longer, and she died. Her death left a void in the family — silent and unbearable.

The family decided to bury the doll along with her. As Okiku always kept the doll with her, they thought her soul would be in peace if they buried the doll along with her. But due to some religious rules, they were unable to do so. The family decided to keep the doll. Left with no other choice, the family encased the doll in a wooden shrine-like box with a glass front and kept the doll on top of a shelf. They named the doll Okiku, in memory of their daughter.

The doll remained still on its shelf, always within view. But soon, the air around it began to feel wrong.

Suddenly, strange events began to plague the house. Furniture, everyday items mysteriously shifted positions on their own, the lights of the house started to turn on by themselves, there was pounding of doors, and at night, the family was hearing a little girl's voice singing songs. All of the family members were having nightmares. Despite living together, each family member felt increasingly alone — as though something unseen watched them, always just out of sight.

One day, Eikichi saw something that stunned him. At first, he thought he was imagining it — but each day, the doll’s hair seemed longer — now streaked with unsettling shades of brown. The hair looked so real that it was hard to tell whether it was doll hair or human hair.

The family decided to cleanse the house and called priests. After a lot of cleansing, the paranormal activities didn't stop.

One night, the father woke up to go to the bathroom, He saw the doll peeking at him from the dark room where the doll was kept — and it started laughing in a child's voice and said:

"お父さん、明日は私の誕生日だよ。覚えてるよね?プレゼント、楽しみにしてるね。
もう2年も誕生日を祝ってないけど、今は私がちゃんと戻ってきたんだから…今年は一緒に祝えるよね。"

Which in English translates to:

"Father, tomorrow is my birthday. You remember, right? I’ll be waiting for my present. We haven’t celebrated my birthday for 2 years. Now that I’m back, we’ll celebrate it this time, right?"

But this wasn't it — the voice changed when she was saying "Now that I’m back, we’ll celebrate it this time, right?"
The voice sounded like a demon/devil.

It was no longer a doll. It had become something else — something demonic

The family decided to leave the house, and they gave the doll to the priests of Mannenji Temple in Hokkaido. The priests there also tried purifying the doll, but nothing happened. Even the priests confessed that they have also noticed the doll's hair growing and falling out. The priests staying there also said that they have constant nightmares, and it is hard to stay in a room near the doll's room. That is why the rooms near the doll's room are always kept empty — with salt and rice sprinkled all over them (salt and rice are said to cleanse negative energy).

The temple is now a tourist destination, and anyone can go and see the Okiku Doll at Mannenji Temple in Hokkaido. Even tourists in recent years have said that they are noticing that the doll's mouth is opening, and some small teeth can also be seen.
