  • Anakin did not bring balance to the Force, Luke did.

It's clear that Anakin, despite being a crucial figure in the prophecy, ended up causing significant imbalance through actions like Order 66 and his embrace of the Dark Side. The overwhelming strength of Darth Vader created a formidable challenge for the remaining Jedi, exemplified by characters like Cal Kestis.

However, I would like to offer a counterpoint. While Anakin's deeds undoubtedly caused imbalance, one could argue that his redemption, facilitated by his son Luke Skywalker, was a crucial step in restoring harmony to the Force. Luke's ability to bring Anakin back from the Dark Side and ultimately defeat both Vader and the Emperor played a pivotal role.

In this context, the true Chosen One might be seen as Luke Skywalker, who not only confronted the Sith but also succeeded in redeeming his father. The titles like "Return of the Jedi" take on a dual meaning, signifying both Luke's return as a Jedi and Vader's return to the Light Side.

The debate, then, centers around whether Anakin's initial actions or Luke's ultimate resolution played a more decisive role in bringing balance to the Force. Your thoughts?

Personally, I think Luke's ultimate resolution played the most important role. Sure, Anakin's actions played a big part but it pales when confronted to what Luke has done. Yes, the redemption was what ultimately killed the Sith, but that redemption happened because of Luke effectively killing the Fener persona. While both father and son played a big part in bringing balance to the Force, I prefer to think that Luke played the bigger role and was the true Chosen One.
I wonder, if Shmi survived Attack of the Clones would Anakin still have turned to the Dark Side? After all, Anakin was completely broken after seeing his mother tortured and killed, so much so that he slaughtered the men, women and children of the Tuskens (the ones that had killed his mother). But what if he had been able to protect her and save her? Would Sheev Palpatine the Great Senator still be able to groom him to the Dark Side? Would Lord Fener be born or would Shmi prevent that? What if, instead of Padme, his own mother showed up at Mustafar and begged him to let go of the Dark Side?
